Statement by India under Agenda Item 2: Interactive dialogue on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Myanmar at the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council (26 February – 5 April 2024) delivered by Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India,

Geneva, 1 March 2024

Mr. President,

We thank the High Commissioner for his oral update.

  1. As an immediate neighbour, and friend of the people of Myanmar, India is deeply concerned with the situation in Myanmar. The precarious humanitarian situation and escalation of violence have led to influx of thousands of persons into our North Eastern States. The ongoing situation also has direct implications in the form of increased transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking. We are doing our best to deal with this situation.
  1. India has always accorded a high priority to maintenance of peace and stability in Myanmar and its economic development. We reiterate our call for the immediate cessation of violence, by all sides, release of political detainees, humanitarian assistance, and the resolution of the crisis through constructive dialogue. India remains steadfast in its support to Myanmar’s transition towards inclusive federal democracy. We also reiterate the need for arriving at peaceful solutions that are Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned.
  1. India supports the ASEAN-led efforts and the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, and we continue to closely coordinate our policy with ASEAN in this regard. We call on the international community to work together in pragmatic and constructive ways to support the people of Myanmar and facilitate a return to peace and stability.
  1. As a close friend of the people of Myanmar, India will continue with its initiatives to strengthen the democratic processes, people-centric projects and capacity building initiatives in Myanmar.

Thank you, Mr. President.
