Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 35th Session (20-31 January 2020) : 3rd UPR of Guinea - Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Ms. Mini Devi Kumam, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India [Geneva, 21 January 2020]

Madam Vice President,

We welcome the delegation of Guinea. We appreciate the measures taken for establishing institutional frameworks on the promotion and protection of human rights and for strengthening the existing ones. We welcome the recent ratification of CESCR.

2. Implementation of many projects and programmes aimed at poverty reduction, promotion of employment and boosting agricultural yields would be important in ensuring socio-economic rights of the people of Guinea. Other notable socio-economic programmes are ensuring equal access to quality education and health needs for all.

3. India recommends the following to Guinea:

(a) Continue its efforts for reducing poverty and creation of employment particularly for youth and women

(b) Strengthen the independence of the National Human Rights Institution further in accordance to the Paris Principles

(c) Continue its efforts for elimination of harmful practices such as forced marriage and female genital mutilation

(d) Consider further strengthening of measures for ensuring access to basic healthcare services

4. We wish the delegation of Guinea all success.
