Statement by India
Mr. President,
We thank the panelists for their views. India has always been part of global discourse on human rights with it’s inter linkages to other global issues, commensurate with its understanding, that common problems can only be solved through inclusive dialogue and mutual understanding.
2. We can’t meaningfully address any global issue such as challenges of migration, climate change or digital divide without ensuring a life of basic dignity to every human being. International collaboration for promoting sustainable development based on sustainable lifestyles and consumption patterns, bridging development deficit, global collaboration on clean and renewable energy, ensuring access to energy is key in climate change negotiations. International Solar Alliance is an example on collective global efforts on climate action.
3. While humane treatment of irregular migrants is absolutely essential, regular international migration is essential for achieving sustainable development in line with goal 10.7 of the SDGs. We must, therefore, cooperate to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration. While emerging technologies can transform lives for the better, disparities in access to such technologies exacerbate the existing inequalities and create new fault-lines. Unless well harnessed, they also have the potential to shake the very foundations of the contemporary institutional structures. It is imperative for the world to overcome these challenges in line with UN Resolution 70/125.
