Statement by India in the Committee on the Application of Standards on the case of the Plurinational State of Bolivia [Minimum Wage Fixing Convention, 1970 (No. 131)] - Delivered by Dr. Sadre Alam, First Secretary during the 107th International Labour Conference 2018

Thank you, Mr. Chairperson.

The delegation of India has taken note of the background document provided by the Office and thanks the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia for providing an update on this issue.

2. India appreciates the positive steps taken by the Government and its commitment to fulfil its international obligations related to minimum wage for the purpose of social justice. Such steps undoubtedly reduce wage gaps and levels of poverty and raise the standard of living in addition to other benefits to the general economy and society in accordance with national priorities. The participation of relevant social partners and especially those representing the more vulnerable, in the process should help realise the principal objectives of the convention in question and the overall decent work agenda and not merely be an end in itself.

3. In fulfilling its labour related obligations, we request ILO and its Member States to fully support the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia.

4. Furthermore, this Standing Committee is and must remain a forum for constructive discussion aimed at improving compliance of Member States with international labour standards.

5. We take this opportunity to wish the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia all success in its endeavors.

6. Lastly, we would like to stress the need to collectively ensure greater transparency, inclusiveness, objectivity, fairness and credibility in the ILO supervisory mechanism in the true spirit of tripartism.

Thank you.
