Mr. President,

India extends a very warm welcome to the delegation of Surinameled by H.E. Mrs. Jennifer van Dijk-Silos, Minister of Justice and Police of Suriname; and thanks them for the informative presentation on the action taken to implement the recommendations received during its first UPR.

Mr. President,

2.      We commend the fact that, despite various challenges, Suriname has shown consistent commitment to advance the enjoyment of human rights by its people. We welcomethe National Assembly’s approval for Suriname’s accession to CRPD and signing of the Optional Protocol to the CRC. We recommendSuriname to consider establishing a National Human Rights Institution in conformity with the Paris Principles.

3.      Suriname’s recent legislative initiatives and amendments to address gender inequality are praiseworthy. In this regard we commend the various awareness-raising activities including training of teachers on gender issues. We would like to request the delegation to share more details on what the National Report refers to as “the multi-faceted approach to counter gender-based discrimination”. We also encourage Suriname to continue effective implementation of the Law Combating Domestic Violence.

4.      We welcome the positive measures taken by Suriname to protect the rights and interests of the persons with disability. We also commend the recent legislative actions to combat child abuse and sexual exploitation. We encourage Suriname to continue its efforts towards improved access to education for tribal children.

5.      We understand that Suriname faces a complex phenomenon of mixed migratory movements. We would like to hear more from the delegation regarding the national efforts to tackle this issue.

6.      We wish the delegation of Suriname all successes in its future endeavors.

Thank you Mr. President.
