Attestation and legalisation of official documents

Legalisation/Attestation of documents/Powers of Attorney/Will etc.

The general principle is that any document signed/issued by a person abroad which has to be used/produced before the authorities in India has to be attested/legalised before the Indian Mission/Post concerned.

(a)    If you are an Indian national with valid Indian passport -

The requirements are:

  • Application form for miscellaneous services (Download Application form for miscellaneous services)

  • The document(s) to be attested in original (together with a photocopy each)

  • Valid passport along with one photocopy

  • Valid residence permit along with one photocopy

  • In case of Power of Attorney / Will - 2 photographs of the executants along with one photocopy


(b)    If you are a Swiss national / foreigner of Indian origin holding valid Swiss passport / valid foreign passport -

The requirements are:

  • Application form for miscellaneous services (Download Application form for miscellaneous services)

  • The documents to be attested in original by the Notary Public and then by the Chancery of State
    (No. 2, Hotel de ville, Geneva) (together with a photocopy of each)
    .

  • Valid passport along with one photocopy

  • Valid residence permit along with one photocopy (if applicable)

  • In case of Power of Attorney/Will, two photographs of the executants (together with a photocopy).

NOTE 1:   The Document(s) / Affidavit(s) must be signed in the presence of the Consulate officials.

NOTE 2:   India is one of the signatories to The Hague Apostille Convention and the new scheme was implemented in India on 29.8.2007. The purpose of the Convention was to reduce the two stage authentication of public documents to one single stage. If a public document is apostilled by the country of origin, it does not require re-authentication by authorities of the country in whose territory it has to be produced.

NOTE 3:   Birth, Death, Marriage and Educational Certificates etc. issued by the Indian authorities in India can also be attested by the Consulate General of India on payment of required fees provided the same have been authenticated by the Consular Section of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Patiala House, New Delhi-110001.

NOTE 4: Documents originality from swiss Govt officers and institutions, has to be first attested by chancery of state and later an it will be attested by consulate
