Statement by India at the UPR of Nicaragua - 07 May, 2014

UPR OF NICARAGUA - INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE

INTERVENTION BY INDIA

 

Mr. President,

India welcomes the delegation of Nicaragua at its second Universal Periodic Review and thanks it for its National report and presentation.

 

We commend the action taken by Nicaragua in implementing the recommendations of its first UPR cycle and the steps taken to further strengthen the legislative and institutional framework for the protection and promotion of Human Rights in Nicaragua.

 

We commend the progress achieved by Nicaragua in reducing poverty and malnutrition through initiatives such as the Zero Hunger programme.

 

We appreciate measures taken by the Nicaraguan Government to guarantee affordable access to health and education to all its citizens especially the marginalized and vulnerable communities. We recommend that Nicaragua continues its efforts to expand the coverage of and access to basic health services.

 

We welcome the adoption of the Public Information Access Act aimed at facilitating easy access to information on public services to its citizens. We recommend thatNicaragua continues its efforts to promote the full exercise of right to freedom of information and expression.

 

We take positive note of the work done by the office of the Human Rights Advocate in advancing basic human rights in Nicaragua. We recommend that Nicaragua continues to strengthen measures to ensure independence of the Office of the Human Rights Advocate.
