UPR WORKING GROUP – EIGHTEENTH SESSION

INTERVENTION BY INDIA

 

Mr. President,

1.India warmly welcomes the delegation of Vietnam led by H.E Mr. Ha Kim Ngoc, DeputyMinister of Foreign Affairs. We thank the delegation for its presentation and the national report.

 

2.We commend Vietnam for undertakingvarious legislative, institutional and policy initiatives since its first review,including the on-going efforts to amend the Constitutionto promote and protect human rights. The UN Treaty Bodies have also welcomed Vietnamese Government’s special measuresfor the poorest ethnic minorities in housing, education and language.

 

3.We welcome Vietnam’s new strategies and priorities to overcome remaining challengesin the field of human rights.

 

4. India would offer the following recommendations;

 

(i)  Continue to take steps to gradually bridge the gap in the standard of living between urban and rural areas;

(ii) Continue to improve access to education in rural areas;

(iii) Enhance support for the reintegration of victims of trafficking, especially women and children.
