309th Session of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization (November 2010)

Statement by delegate of India regarding observance by the Government of Myanmar of the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize, Convention No.87.

Mr. Chairman,

We have listened carefully to the statement made by the Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar.   We are appreciative of the ongoing collaborative efforts between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the ILO on labour-related issues.  We acknowledge the process of transition that Myanmar is undergoing today towards a democratic society.  The new constitution, the rights of citizens and the intention of the legislative body to enact laws for labour organizations in line with Convention No.87 is also welcomed.  We encourage technical assistance from ILO to supplement these efforts.

We consider these steps as progressive indicating the commitment of the Government of Myanmar to address the issues arising out of the Freedom of Association Convention No.87 and further encourage a climate of dialogue that facilitates constructive cooperation between Myanmar and the ILO with regard to Convention No.87.

Thank you, Chairman.
