Statement by India during Annual Discussion on Integration of a Gender Perspective, at the 57th Session of Human Rights Council (09 September-11 October 2024), Permanent Mission of India, Geneva

Mr. President

The discussion today is very relevant as we aim to foster a dialogue, promote gender-responsive policies and identify solutions for advancing gender equality.

2. India sees women and girls as equal partners in economic development and social progress, as we strive ahead on a path of women-led development. Through increased access to basic facilities, targeted investment in employment and skill building, and progressive legislation, women are being empowered to become leaders and key contributors to India’s growth story.

3. Our commitment to women empowerment is reflected in highest ever gender-budgeting in the latest 2024-25 budget, which allocated more than USD 36 billion for pro-women programmes.

4. Under one of the largest financial inclusion programmes in the world, in last decade, more than 280 million bank accounts have been opened for women. India's Self-Help Group movement successfully demonstrates community-led development, with millions of women accessing credit and engaging in productive livelihoods.

5. Initiatives like the Prime Minister’s MUDRA Scheme and the Stand-Up India scheme have significantly empowered women entrepreneurs, providing crucial financial support. India’s Labor Codes and Maternity Benefit Acts are aimed at creating a congenial working environment for women.

6. The Ayushman Bharat health scheme has extended coverage to nearly half of its beneficiaries being women, underlining our commitment to women's health and security.

Mr. President

7. India remains committed to strengthen women’s agency and socio-economic capacities, so that they are empowered to be the leading force of our development trajectory.

Thank you.
