Statement by India under Agenda Item 4: Interactive dialogue on the High Commissioner’s Report on the situation of human rights in Myanmar at the 57th Session of the Human Rights Council (9 September - 11 October 2024)   delivered by Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, First Secretary, Geneva, 24 September 2024

Mr. Vice President

We take note of the High Commissioner’s report on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

2. India has been repeatedly calling for immediate cessation of violence by all sides, release of political detainees, humanitarian assistance, and the resolution of the crisis in Myanmar through constructive dialogue. However, we remain deeply concerned as the humanitarian and security situation in Myanmar continues to be precarious. Increased influx of people from Myanmar into our north eastern states and the challenge of transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking continue to be areas of grave concern.

3. As an immediate neighbour and a friend of the people of Myanmar, we reiterate the need for arriving at peaceful solutions that are Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned. We have always accorded priority to peace, stability and development of Myanmar and have been making consistent efforts in the form of humanitarian assistance and people centric projects. As a First Responder to natural disasters in the region, India recently launched Operation Sadbhav to provide Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief to those affected by Typhoon Yagi. A total of 53 tonnes of emergency aid worth US$ 1 million was delivered. This initiative builds on India’s past HADR support during Cyclones Mocha (2023), Mora (2017) and Nargis (2008).

4. We remain steadfast in our support to Myanmar’s transition towards inclusive federal democracy and reiterate our support to the efforts led by ASEAN and the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, and continue to coordinate our policy with ASEAN in this regard. We also continue to support the efforts of the UN Secretary General towards the political resolution of the situation in Myanmar.

Thank you.
