Statement by India at the 37th Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation of human rights in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, delivered by Mr. Mohammed Hussain K.S., Counsellor & Legal Adviser, Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, Geneva, on 7 February 2025

Mr. President

1.We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which has serious implications for peace and security in that region.

2. India strongly condemns the violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC and the acts of violence that continue to undermine peace and stability in the region, and violate human rights. India firmly supports regional diplomatic initiatives, such as the Luanda Process and the Nairobi Process, which could play a crucial role in fostering dialogue, de-escalating tensions, and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

3. India has been contributing to the peacekeeping efforts in the region. We have around 1,200 UN peacekeepers serving in eastern DRC. A significant number of Indian nationals currently live in the region, and they are now facing displacement and increased risk of violence. We remain deeply concerned about their well-being, and reiterate our call for the immediate cessation of hostilities.

Thank you.
