Statement by India during the 4th Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Egypt in the 48th Session of UPR Working Group (20 to 31 Jan 2025) delivered by Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 28 Jan 2025

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Egypt. We appreciate the measures taken under Egypt’s first National Human Rights Strategy. Egypt’s efforts to improve prison conditions and to introduce pre-trial detention reforms are noteworthy.

2. In the spirit of constructive engagement, we recommend the following to Egypt:

One, Continue efforts to combat terrorism while paying due attention to protecting human rights.

Two, Continue to take measures to realize the right to development, including through projects aimed at reducing unemployment and enhancing living standards;

Three, Continue efforts to ensure freedom of the press and the right of access to information.

And four, Continue efforts towards empowerment of women, including through equitable divorce laws.

3. We wish Egypt a successful UPR review.

Thank you.
