Statement on Agenda Item 1: Hosting of UNCTAD XVI by Vietnam

Special Trade and Development Board Meeting

17 January 2025 (10 am) Room XX, Palais des Nations, Geneva,

Thank you, Mr. President.

  • At the outset, India aligns itself with the statement made by G77 the Group of 77 welcoming Viet Nam's hosting UNCTAD XVI later this year.
  • India has been an active participant in the work of UNCTAD, to promote the integration of developing countries into the world economy with an emphasis on inclusive growth, sustainability, and international cooperation. India was the first country to host the UNCTAD Conference outside its Headquarters at New Delhi in 1968.
  • Chair, UNCTAD XVI is being hosted by Vietnam at the time when UNCTAD is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It offers a unique opportunity to further enhance dialogue on sustainable development, and address critical issues such as digital transformation, trade facilitation, climate change, and inequality.
  • India wishes to convey once again its gratitude to Viet Nam for the generous offer to host the conference, which is a true reflection of its leadership role in UNCTAD and showcases its dedication for collaboration and progress. We join others in expressing our full support to Viet Nam and wishing all the best for a successful UNCTAD XVI.
