Geneva, 13th May 2024

Mr. President,

This delegation would first like to congratulate you and other officer bearers on your Election and an opportunity to lead this historic Conference. We also acknowledge the work of the Secretariat for excellent preparations and arrangements, leading up to the Diplomatic Conference.

Mr. President,

2. After two decades of negotiations, the Diplomatic Conference serves as a pivotal moment in our collective efforts towards concluding an international legal instrument for the protection, preservation and rightful utilisation of our common heritage and resources within the Intellectual Property System.

3. To achieve collective growth and deliver the promise of a sustainable future it is imperative that we come together to address the challenges and opportunities presented by this intersection of intellectual property rights, biodiversity protection and traditional knowledge.

Mr. President,

4. India reaffirms its unwavering support for these ongoing efforts and is committed to playing a constructive and proactive role in these deliberations. As a nation steeped in cultural heritage, biodiversity, and traditional wisdom, India carries a profound responsibility to advocate for the preservation, protection and rightful utilisation of these invaluable assets.

5. In alignment with our commitment to constructive engagement, India has submitted proposals and textual modifications to the draft international legal instrument. These suggestions aim to enhance clarity, purpose and effectiveness, while acknowledging the diverse perspectives of member states and stakeholders, especially issues that are of priority to countries of the Global South.

Mr. President,

6. As we convene over the coming days, we urge all delegations to approach the discussions with a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. It is only through open dialogue and shared understanding that we can develop solutions that are both inclusive and effective. On our part, we would like to reaffirm India’s commitment to work together with all delegations to seize this historic opportunity.

Thank You, Mr. President.
