Statement by India at the exchange of views with Special Procedure Mandate Holders of the UN Human Rights Council, delivered by Mr. Mohammed Hussain K.S., Counsellor & Legal Adviser, Permanent Mission of India to the UN, Geneva on Friday 13 December 2024

Mr. Chair,

  1. Firstly, we congratulate you on your election as the Chair of the Coordination Committee. We also take this opportunity to thank Ms. Isha Dyfan, for her excellent work and capable steering of the Committee during her tenure as the Chair.
  1. We would like to thank the Committee for organizing this valuable exchange of views between member States and the special procedures mandate holders.
  1. Let me begin by acknowledging and appreciating the important work being carried out by the various mandate holders. We remain committed to engaging constructively with them and sharing relevant information relating to their mandates. In this spirit, we have consistently briefed many of the mandate holders on both our initiatives and the challenges we face. We have also endeavored to respond to their communications and requests for information.

Mr. Chair,

  1. We believe that a strict adherence to the Code of Conduct remains an essential cornerstone for the mandate holders, to build and retain mutual trust with member States, which would also enhance the credibility of the mandates and make their work more effective.
  1. On our part, India has been supporting their work, including through specific voluntary financial contributions, which we have enhanced this year.

Mr. Chair,

  1. We take this opportunity to emphasize that it is critical for mandate holders to duly take into account the perspectives and information provided by member States; and to refrain from having even a perception of their judgments and actions being influenced by any personal prejudices or political biases. We highlight this as we believe that trust and cooperation between the mandate holders and member States is essential to advancing the objectives of the Human Rights Council.

I thank you.
