Intervention by India at the 47th session of the Universal Periodic Review Working Group (4-15 November 2024): 4th UPR of Ethiopia, delivered by Mr. Gaurav Kumar Thakur, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 12 November 2024

Mr. President,

      India welcomes the delegation of Ethiopia. We note measures taken to implement the recommendations accepted by Ethiopia in its 3ª UPR. Strengthening Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and ensuring autonomy in its functioning; imparting human rights education and training to various sections of the society including law enforcement personnel are important capacity building measures.

2.  India takes note of efforts made by Ethiopia towards improving socio-economic rights of its citizens and efforts made to combat terrorism.

3.  India recommends the following to Ethiopia:

i.  First, Strengthen institutional mechanisms to bring harmony in society through dialogue and resolution of differences through peaceful means;

ii.  Second, Continue ongoing measures for poverty reduction, access to health care and quality education;

iii.  Third, Promote the rights and welfare of children; particularly for those from vulnerable backgrounds; and

iv.  Fourth, Continue measures to combat discriminatory practices against women and girls, including gender and ethnicity based violence.
