Statement by India under Agenda Item 3: Interactive dialogue with the SR on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence delivered by Mr. Muhammed Shabeer K, Under Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, on 12 September 2024
Mr. President,
- We take note of the report of the Special Rapporteur.
Mr. President,
- India strongly believes that States have the solemn duty to take action against any violation of human rights. India’s continued approach towards promotion and protection of human rights is rooted in our strong democratic credentials, and backed by institutional strengths of a fiercely independent judiciary, free and vibrant media, active civil society, that monitor India’s compliance with its human rights obligations and commitments.
- Our modernized Criminal justice system- Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita 2023, is better suited to evolving needs, and is aimed at delivering justice in a more responsive and equitable manner. The underlying goal of our justice system is to ensure access to justice and compensation to victims in a transparent manner, and that the rule of law is applicable to everyone.
Mr. President,
- India sees various rights as inter-linked. We deem that advancement of economic, social and cultural rights has tremendous and far-reaching impact on people’s ability to enjoy their civil and political rights. Our governance philosophy not only aims at delivering civil and political rights to all, but also on ensuring that benefits of economic development reaches everyone, especially the most vulnerable. With collective efforts and everyone’s participation, trust and contribution, India has already taken great strides to ensure a life of equality, dignity and justice for all its people.
