Statement by India during the Annual panel discussion on the adverse impacts of climate change on human rights at the 56th Session of the Human Rights Council (18 June - 12 July 2024), Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 1 July 2024

Madam Vice President

1.  We thank the panellists for their valuable remarks and welcome the panel’s focus on livelihood resilience, equity and climate justice.

2.  Climate resilience is a critical enabler for the achievement of sustainable development and progress on attaining SDGs. Vulnerability to the impacts of climate change is strongly co-related with the level of development and exposure to extreme weather events. Urgent climate action is required, based on the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, that form part of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and are the cornerstone of any discussion in this regard.

3.  India has been leading from the front in ensuring climate justice and equity through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Leadership Group for Industry Transition. Sustainability and climate change resilience form the core of India’s initiatives such as the National Action Plan on Climate Change, and Mission LiFE.

Madam Vice President

4.  We would be interested to know how greater international cooperation can address the pressing need of climate finance, technology development and transfer, to help achieve climate change mitigation, adaptation, and climate resilient development from a human rights perspective.

Thank you
