Mr. President

We thank the High Commissioner for his report and note the recommendations made therein.

  1. As rightly pointed out in the report, Climate change is one of the leading causes of unprecedented rise in global hunger. Increasing number of extreme weather events have adversely affected global food ecosystems. Naturally, the level of development is co-related with the vulnerability to impacts of climate change on food security. Therefore, climate and food related policy and finance should be guided by principles of climate justice, equity, common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, considering historical responsibilities, as also noted in the report. This is of utmost importance, for mobilizing finance and making the latest technologies available to developing countries to overcome this challenge.
  1. Another important aspect highlighted in the report is the need to systematically adapt food systems to climate change. To attain this objective, India is developing climate resilient agricultural practices and technologies under its National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture. We also joined the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate that seeks to significantly increase investment in climate smart agriculture and sustainable food systems innovation.

Mr. President

  1. We would like to know what concrete steps can be taken in terms of international cooperation to ensure climate resilient and uninterrupted food supply chains, towards the overall objective of achieving the SDG 2, to end global hunger.

Thank you.
