Statement by India under Agenda Item 3: Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery at the 54st Session of Human Rights Council (11 September - 13 October 2023) delivered by Dr. P.R. Thulasidass, Under Secretary, Geneva, 18 September

Mr. Vice-President,

We take note of Special Rapporteur’s presentation of his report on contemporary forms of slavery and his assessment of Homelessness as a cause and consequence of contemporary forms of slavery.

India is committed to continue its efforts to implement various schemes and measures to ensure inclusive access to adequate housing and basic amenities. In line with the Government of India’s commitment to ‘Housing for All’, the world’s largest affordable housing programme is being implemented in India. The ownership of the houses is either solely with the female member of the household or in joint ownership. Thus, it has also contributed to empowerment of women while ensuring access to basic civic amenities to families.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic year, the Government has been providing dignified living spaces under the Affordable Rental Housing Schemes to people throughout the country. The Smart Cities Mission is transforming cities into sustainable centres of economic activity and providing improved quality of life.

India is fully committed to the realization of the right to adequate housing for its people and to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Mr. Vice-President,

India remains fully committed to support the SR in fulfilment of his mandate.

I thank you
