Mr. President,

1.  We take note of the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

2.  As India shares a long land border with Myanmar, we have direct stakes in the peace, stability and development of the country. We have had an influx of Myanmar nationals into India. Transnational crimes are also on the rise.

3.  We have repeatedly called for an immediate cessation of violence, release of all political prisoners, humanitarian access, resolution of the crisis through constructive dialogue and transition of Myanmar towards an inclusive federal democratic system.

4.  As friends of the people of Myanmar, we have continued with our people-centric development and humanitarian assistance. We are also working with various stakeholders to build capacities in democratic systems and practices including in the areas of constitutionalism and federalism.

5.  We reaffirm our consistent support to the ASEAN-led efforts in Myanmar and strongly believe in the centrality and unity of ASEAN. We appreciate the role of UNSG’s Special Envoy on Myanmar. We also feel that there is a need to take into consideration the views of neighbouring countries that have been most impacted by the ongoing developments in Myanmar.

I thank you. Mr. President.
