Statement by India during Interactive Dialogue on Secretary General’s Report on the Adverse Impact of Climate Change on the Full Realization of the Right to Food at the 53rd Session of the Human Rights Council (19 June - 14 July 2023)  delivered by Mr. S. Senthil Kumar, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, Monday 3 July 2023

Mr. President,

We thank the Secretary-General for his report.

2. Climate change negatively impacts the enjoyment of human rights, including the right to food. The increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events has adversely impacted food ecosystems. Climate change is reducing crop yield and lowering the nutritional quality of the produce. People residing in flood, cyclone and drought prone areas are the most vulnerable. We need resilient and uninterrupted food supply chains for achieving SDG 2 to end global hunger.

3. The Government of India is developing climate resilient technologies in agriculture, including crops, horticulture, livestock, fisheries and poultry. India recently joined the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate that seeks to significantly increase investment in climate smart agriculture and sustainable food systems innovation.

Mr. President,

4. Vulnerability to the impacts of climate change is strongly co-related with the level of development and exposure to extreme weather events. Urgent climate action is required, based on the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, for mobilizing finance and making latest technologies available to developing countries.

5. We would like to know how greater international cooperation can help achieve climate change mitigation, adaptation, and climate resilient development.

I thank you.
