Statement by India under Agenda Item 6: Adoption of UPR Outcomes of Tonga at the 54th Session of Human Rights Council (11 September – 13 October 2023) delivered by Mr. Mohammed Hussain K.S., First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 29 September 2023
Mr. Vice-President,
1. India warmly welcomes the delegation of Tonga for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review held on 1 May 2023.
2. The review saw active participation with 59 delegations taking the floor and making a total of 173 recommendations. We appreciate the constructive engagement of the delegation of Tonga during the entire review, which reflects the strong commitment they attach to the UPR process.
3. We appreciate that as many as 110 recommendations have been accepted by Tonga, including 2 recommendations made by us.
4. India had expressed appreciation for the launch of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics 2019-2023, the National Strategic Plan for Long-term Care 2020–2024, and the National Health Information System as well as for the ratification of the ILO Convention on the Worst Forms of Child Labour and Tonga’s initiatives such as the Joint National Action Plan on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management 2018-2028
5. While recommending the adoption of their UPR report, we congratulate the delegation of Tonga on a successful review and wish them success in their efforts for implementing the accepted recommendations.
