[Geneva 21st March 2023]

Mr. President

1.  We have been following the developments in the Tigray region and the consequent humanitarian situation closely. We welcome the Agreement for Lasting Peace through permanent cessation of hostilities signed between the Ethiopian Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

2.  We welcome the steps taken by the Ethiopian Government for facilitating the work of humanitarian agencies to provide relief and the resumption of basic services following the peace agreement.

3.  We also welcome the Ethiopian Government’s steps to cooperate with the OHCHR and the measures taken to implement the recommendations contained in the joint investigation report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commissioner and the OHCHR.

4.  We note Ethiopia’s efforts towards fulfillment of its international and national human rights obligations. In this regard, we note the statement of the Ethiopian Government affirming its commitment to undertake thorough investigations and bring those responsible for the violations to justice.

5.  In conclusion, India reiterates its strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ethiopia, and support for its efforts towards addressing the situation in the Tigray region.

I thank you, Mr. President.
