Mr. President,

We thank the Special Rapporteur for presentation of the report and take note of its conclusions and recommendations.

Mr. President,

2. India attaches highest priority to ensuring safety and security of women and is committed to end violence against women for which various steps have been taken by the Government at the operational level.

3. Our pan-India Emergency Response Support System provides for dispatch of field resources to the location of reported distress. One Stop Centres provide integrated services to women affected by violence.

4. The issue of domestic violence has been addressed through the effective implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Other Crimes, 2018 provides for compensation to women victims of identified gender-based crimes and victims of child sexual abuse.

5. We have noted that the SR’s report has addressed the link between custody cases, violence against women and violence against children. In India, women are entitled to have custody and guardianship of their children. Indian courts apply the paramount principle of ‘best interest and welfare of the child’, while deciding custody cases.

6. Mr. President, India will continue to accord high priority to ensuring the safety, security and well-being of women.

I thank you.
