Statement by India at the 36th special session of the Human Rights Council on the human rights impact of the ongoing conflict in the Sudan delivered by Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Permanent Representative of India

(Geneva 11th May 2023)

Thank you, Mr. President.

India has longstanding friendly relations with Sudan and its people. Over the years, India has emerged as a development partner of Sudan and has assisted Sudan in implementing several projects through grants and concessional lines of credit, doing capacity building and providing humanitarian assistance.

2. We are closely monitoring the complex and evolving security situation in Sudan. We are concerned over the loss of civilian lives, injuries and destruction. The conflict has also negatively affected the enjoyment of human rights by people of Sudan. We have also been coordinating closely with various partners for the safe movement of those Indians who were impacted by the conflict and wanted to be evacuated and we have been able to safely evacuate about 4000 Indian nationals as well as nationals of other countries from Sudan in coordination with various partners.

3. India has been consistently underscoring the importance of mutual trust, engagement, dialogue, and reconciliation to resolve the conflict in Sudan. We have urged all sides to exercise restraint and work together to build trust and confidence, which would pave the way for dialogue and transition towards civilian-led government. Peace and stability in Sudan is of paramount importance for India and the entire African continent and the world.

Mr. President,

4. India hopes to see Sudan emerge as a prosperous, peaceful and stable country and towards that objective, we will continue to support Sudan and its people. We remain confident that the people of Sudan will overcome the current challenges and make progress towards securing a stable and prosperous future.

I thank you.
