Statement by India at the Organizational Meeting of HRC for the 17th cycle of the Human Rights Council delivered by Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Permanent Representative of India

[Geneva, 9th December 2022]

Mr. President,

Thank you for giving me the floor.

We congratulate you and Members of the Bureau on the successful conduct of the Human Rights Council this year.  We appreciate your exceptional leadership and initiatives towards steering the Council during challenging times, in the backdrop of intense politicization and polarization of the Council. We thank co-facilitators and focal points for their exemplary work and their reports.

2. We commend you and the Bureau for organizing consultations as well as informal exchange of views among various stakeholders to promote dialogue and cooperation for the smooth functioning of the Council. We also appreciate the series of informal consultations led by you and your team on improving efficiency measures.

3. Despite the immense challenges to the Council, it is heartening that we have been able to strike a balance between the efficiency and the quality of our work. We support the continuation of the existing measures for another one year. We also support various decisions taken together by the Council for its organizational work.

4. I congratulate the Permanent Representative of Czechia for his election as President of the Council and the PRs of Maldives, Gambia, Bolivia and Luxembourg on their election as Vice Presidents of the Council. We are looking forward to working closely with the Bureau and members of the Council and will extend our full cooperation.

Mr. President,

5. It is important that the Council continues to focus on creating a conducive environment, within the Council enabling genuine, open and effective dialogue and consensus building. We hope that the Council and its institutions will continue to work together constructively towards the goal of global promotion and protection of human rights. In this regard, we welcome the statement of High Commissioner made earlier today, including celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of UDHR.

Thank you, Mr. President.
