Statement by India under Agenda Item 2 Interactive Dialogue on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner on the situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan at the 50th Session of HRC (13 June – 8 July 2022) delivered by Ms. Seema Pujani, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India
(Geneva,
16 June 2022)

Mr. President,

We have taken note of the oral update by the High Commissioner.

  1. As a contiguous neighbour and a long-standing partner of Afghanistan, recent developments in Afghanistan, particularly the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation there, continue to be a matter of concern.
  1. Our special relationship with Afghan people and the stipulations spelt out in UNSC Resolution 2593 have continued to guide India’s approach to Afghanistan.
  1. We remain steadfast in our commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, including Afghan refugees. Over the past several months, India has vastly scaled up its humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan. India has already supplied 23,000 MTs of wheat, half a million doses of COVAXIN, 13 tons of essential lifesaving medicines and winter clothing for the Afghan people.
  1. Ensuring regional stability and security is our priority. Terrorism continues to pose a serious threat to Afghanistan and the region. We believe that there should be zero tolerance on terrorism.
  1. As Afghanistan’s largest regional development partner, India would continue to coordinate with other stakeholders to work towards enabling expeditious provision of much needed humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

I thank you, Mr. President.
