Statement by India at the Commemorative Event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Human Rights council during the 50th Session of Human Rights Council

(13 June – 8 July 2022)

Geneva, 15 June 2022

Mr. President,

We welcome the initiative to organize this high-level event to mark the 50th session of the Human Rights Council and appreciate the address by the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, the UN Secretary General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights along with other dignitaries.

Mr. President,

This is an opportune occasion for us to assess the Council’s achievements, reflect on its failures and deliberate on ways to strengthen it further, so as to enable it to better achieve its objectives. India has always attached great significance to the Council and its various mechanisms. We have endeavored to bring a balanced perspective to help build bridges across the multiple divides that exist within the Council. Very soon we will be celebrating 75 years of UDHR. We would also be reviewing the status of the HRC as a subsidiary body of the UNGA. Both these will give us a good opportunity to reflect on our achievements towards global promotion and protection of human rights.

Mr. President,

We believe that promotion and protection of human rights is best pursued through dialogue, consultation and cooperation among UN Member States and through provision of technical assistance and capacity building. We hope going forward concerted efforts will be made for building consensus, especially on human rights issues of universal concern and achieve our common aspirations under UDHR.

I thank you.
