Statement by India under Agenda Item 3: Interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity, during the 50th Session of Human Rights Council (13 June – 08 July 2022) delivered by Ms. Jagpreet Kaur, Under Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs

(Geneva, 24 June 2022)

Thank you, Mr. President.

My delegation takes note of the Independent Expert’s report on the extraterritoriality of human rights, including the recommendations.

  1. While the primary responsibility for promotion and protection of human rights within its boundaries, lies with the State concerned, we believe that international solidarity is fundamental to the global promotion and protection of human rights. International cooperation is of critical importance in dealing with global challenges that impact the enjoyment of human rights including setbacks in the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals, climate change and terrorism.
  1. India has been at the forefront in responding to the calls for assistance around the world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided vaccines, medicines and other health products as well as capacity building to more than 150 countries. We have taken a lead in bringing together international coalitions such as International Solar Alliance and Coalition for Disaster Resilient infrastructure to address the grave challenge of climate change.

Mr. President,

  1. All business enterprises should respect human rights in accordance with the laws of the host state. The Securities and Exchange Board of India has made the filing of Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting mandatory for the top 1000 listed companies. Filing of such reports is expected to lead companies to ensure responsible business conduct through their value chains.

I thank you, Mr. President.
