Statement by India under Agenda Item 6: Adoption of UPR Outcomes of Samoa at the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council (28 February-1 April 2022) delivered by Ms. Seema Pujani, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India (Geneva, 23 March 2022)

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Samoa for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its 3rd Universal Periodic Review that was held on 2 November 2021.

2. The review saw substantive participation with 54 delegations taking the floor and making a total of 145 recommendations.

3. India appreciates that as many as 112 recommendations have been accepted by Samoa, including 3 recommendations made by us. We also appreciate the constructive engagement by the delegation of Samoa during the entire review, which reflects the strong commitment Samoa attaches to the UPR process.

4. India had commended Samoa’s efforts to integrate the SDGs into the Strategy for the Development of Samoa, its strategy for targeting improved quality of life for all and incorporating the needs of the most vulnerable groups across the 4 priority pillars and 14 sector plans. We had taken positive note of Samoa becoming party to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

5. We warmly congratulate Samoa for a successful review and wish them all the success in their efforts for implementing the accepted recommendations.

Thank you, Mr. President.
