Statement by India under Item 4: Interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Myanmar at the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council (28 February – 1 April 2022) delivered by Ms. Seema Pujani, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India

  [Geneva, 21st March, 2022]

Mr. President,

We thank the High Commissioner for her Report.

  1. 2.As a democratic country that shares a long land and maritime border with Myanmar, India is deeply interested in seeing Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest; release of detainees and prisoners; resolution of issues through dialogue and complete cessation of all violence. We strongly condemn violence perpetrated by any side and against civilians.
  1. 3.India has been invested in the democratic processes in Myanmar since 2011. We have worked with several stakeholders in the country towards developing capacities in democratic systems and practices in areas such as constitutionalism and federalism.  We are renewing these efforts for Myanmar to emerge as a stable, democratic federal union.
  1. 4.India has supported the ASEAN five point consensus. The efforts of UNSG’s Special Envoy and the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy must complement each other to achieve the shared objective of restoring democracy in Myanmar.
  1. 5.Myanmar is facing humanitarian distress as the number of people seeking assistance continues to grow. The issue of humanitarian aid must not get politicized.
  1. 6.India is committed to helping the people of Myanmar. As part of our efforts, we have recently gifted one million doses of “Made in India” vaccines to the Myanmar Red Cross Society, taking the total tally of our grant to 3.7 million doses.  India has also contributed to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance.
  1. 7.It is important to ensure that our ongoing efforts towards the safe, speedy and sustainable repatriation of displaced persons from Bangladesh to the Rakhine State of Myanmar are not undermined due to developments in Myanmar. We will continue to support the endeavours of the Government of Bangladesh in this regard.
  1. 8.The full statement will be uploaded on HRC Extranet.

I thank you.
