Mr. President,

We thank the Special Rapporteur for his report and take note of the references to India therein.

Pollution, especially that caused by hazardous substances, threatens a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and individuals’ right to life. On its part, India has acceded to all the five international instruments for the management and disposal of hazardous wastes and has given effect to them domestically through National legislations, Rules and Regulations.

Indias commitment to the protection of the environment is guided by Prime Minister Modi’s vision of the Panchamrit or 5 elements for energy transition to combat climate change outlined at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

Mr. President,

The Supreme Court of India has been proactively protecting the environmental rights of our citizens. The National Green Tribunal was also established in 2010 for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection.

To mitigate pollution from industries, norms related to emissions and effluents from various industrial sectors have been notified. Online monitoring of industrial pollution is being undertaken for over 2700 industries. The Coastal Zone Regulatory Authority has been established for pollution abatement around the coastal areas and their sustainable development.

The Government has been taking necessary steps to combat air pollution in the major cities. Pollution Control Boards are regularly monitoring water quality of rivers and water bodies in the country through a network of monitoring stations.

I thank you.
