Madam President,

India thanks the High Commissioner for her oral update on the situation in Myanmar.

Myanmar is a country with which India shares a long land and maritime border.  As such, India has always accorded a high priority to maintenance of peace and stability in Myanmar and its economic development.

India has been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar.  We have worked with all concerned towards establishment of a stable democratic federal union in Myanmar.  We have expressed our deep concerns on developments in Myanmar, have strongly condemned the use of violence and urged maximum restraint. We have called for upholding the rule of law and release of political detainees.

As a neighbour of Myanmar, we are concerned at the impact of political instability in the country and its spillover beyond Myanmar’s borders. We have been facing the situation of people crossing over the border into our territory.

We call upon the leadership of Myanmar to work together to resolve their differences in a peaceful and constructive manner.  Restoring democratic order should be the priority of all stakeholders in Myanmar. The international community must lend its constructive support to the people of Myanmar at this critical juncture.

Madam President,

India welcomes the ASEAN initiative on Myanmar and the ‘Five-Point Consensus’. Our diplomatic engagements are aimed at strengthening these efforts. It is important that we all extend support to the ongoing ASEAN efforts.

As a friend of the people of Myanmar, we will continue with our people-centric projects and capacity building initiatives in Myanmar, including in the Rakhine region. Further, we will renew our initiatives to strengthen the democratic process in Myanmar.

Thank you, Madam President.
