Statement by India under Agenda Item 6 : Adoption of UPR Outcomes of Sweden at the 45th Session of the Human Rights Council (14 September – 07 October 2020) delivered by Mr. Pawankumar Badhe, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India (Geneva, 29 September 2020)

Madam President,

India welcomes the delegation of Sweden for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its 3rd Universal Periodic Review and its support to the UPR mechanism. 

2. It is noteworthy that the review saw a substantive participation with as many as 117 member states taking the floor and making a total of 300 recommendations.

3. India appreciates that as many as 214 recommendations have been accepted by Sweden including recommendations made by India. India also appreciates the constructive engagement by the delegation of Sweden during the entire review, which reflects the strong commitment, Sweden attaches to the UPR process.

4. India welcomes the decision by the Swedish Government to establish a national human rights institution next year in accordance with the Paris principles. While recommending the adoption of the report on its UPR, we warmly congratulate Sweden for a successful review and wish them all success in efforts for implementing the accepted recommendations.
