Statement by India at the 37th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group Meeting (18 – 29 January, 2021): 3rd UPR of Rwanda – Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Mr. Pawankumar Badhe, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva 25th January, 2021

Madam President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Rwanda and thanks the delegation for their comprehensive presentation. India appreciates the progress made by Rwanda since its last review.

2. India notes the positive revisions in the Rwandan constitution in 2015 including to include a separate chapter on human rights and freedom.

3. India makes the following recommendations to Rwanda:

  1. Further enhance efforts to combat all forms of gender-based violence against women, including domestic and sexual violence.
  2. Continue to make efforts to bring its domestic legislations in line with the international treaties Rwanda was party to before the Constitutional Amendment of 2015.
  3. Continue taking steps to strengthen the legal framework for protection of children and rights of children.

4. We wish the delegation of Rwanda all success in its future endeavors.
