Statement by India under Adoption of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Qatar in the 42nd Session of the Human Rights Council (09-27 September 2019), delivered by Mr. S. Senthil Kumar, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, (Geneva, 20 September 2019)

Madam Vice President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Qatar for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its Universal Periodic Review undertaken on 15th May 2019.

2. The review saw participation and engagement with as many as 104 delegations taking the floor and making 270 recommendations. India notes that as many as 178 recommendations have been accepted by Qatar including recommendations made by India. India appreciates constructive engagement by Qatar during the review process.

3. India notes Qatar’s accession to two international covenants and legislative reforms undertaken including amendments to the legal framework regulating the rights of expatriate workers. Other highlights of the review was action plan adopted by Qatar for combating human trafficking as well as various efforts for empowering women and their inclusion in all areas.

4. While recommending the adoption of the report on its UPR, we warmly congratulate Qatar for its successful review and wish them all success in their efforts in implementing the accepted recommendations.
