Statement by India under Adoption of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Portugal in the 42nd Session of the Human Rights Council (09-27 September 2019), delivered by Ms Mini Devi Kumam, First Secretary,

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Portugal for the adoption of the Working Group’s report on its UPR undertaken on 8th May 2019.

2. The review saw active participation with 94 delegations taking the floor and making 245 recommendations. India appreciates that as many as 231 recommendations have been accepted by Portugal including recommendations made by India. India also appreciates constructive engagement by Portugal during the review process.

3. India takes note that the recommendations accepted by Portugal are already implemented or in the process of implementation. India appreciates the new National Strategy for Equality and Non-Discrimination which focuses on elimination of all forms of discrimination, promoting equal opportunities, access to the labour market and legislation on equal pay for equal work for men and women.

4. While recommending the adoption of the report, we warmly congratulate Portugal for its successful review. We also wish Portugal all success in implementing the accepted recommendations.
