Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 34th Session (04-15 November 2019) : 3rd UPR of Iraq - Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Ambassador Rajiv K. Chander, Permanent Representative of India, [Geneva, 11 November 2019]

 

Madam Vice President,

                            India warmly welcomes the delegation of Iraq. We note that Iraq has adopted various laws and policies for strengthening the human rights framework as well as developing the institutional infrastructure for human rights. Iraq Vision 2030 would be important for generating sustainable income, developing human resources and establishing an effective social security network.

2.    We welcome the implementation of national development plans, poverty reduction strategy, the Eradication of Illiteracy Act and enhanced coverage of basic health services.

3.     India recommends the following to Iraq:

(i) Continue ongoing efforts for empowering women particularly for participation in politics and the decision-making process

(ii) Continue implementation of the national strategies and the development plan on poverty reduction

(iii) Make further efforts for improving welfare of children particularly on access to education, healthcare, safe drinking water and protection from all violence

(iv) Undertake further measures on education, awareness campaigns, training and capacity building measures in the field of human rights
