Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 33rd Session (06-17 May 2019) : 3rd UPR of Democratic Republic of the Congo - Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Dr. A. Sudhakara Reddy, Counsellor (Legal), [Geneva, 07 May 2019]

Mr. President,

India welcomes the delegation of the Democratic Republic of Congo. India takes note of the difficulties and constraints faced by DRC in improving the socio-economic infrastructure due to several factors. Considering this, India acknowledges efforts made by DRC towards bringing peace and development.

  1. India takes note of the establishment and operationalization of the National Human Rights Commission of DRC. India also notes adoption of the National Strategic Development with a focus on enhancing income and development. Some notable socio-economic initiatives undertaken by DRC are implementation of the National Health Development Plan, Act on water for access to drinking water, reforms on Social Security and revision of the National Gender Policy. The focus on gender parity in political representations, basic health services, education and training is essential for empowering women and girls.
  1. India recommends the following to the DRC:
  1. Take steps for ensuring access to education, health and other basic services by all its children
  2. Continue measures for empowering women and girls through provision of equal socio-economic opportunities and encouraging participation in political and decision making levels
  3. Continue with implementation of measures for further improvement in the socio-economic conditions of its people
  1. India wishes DRC all success in its UPR.

Thank you, Mr. President.
