Statement by India under Adoption of the Report of the Working

Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Afghanistan

in the 41stSession of the Human Rights Council ( 24 June – 12 July 2019), delivered by Mr. Vimarsh Aryan, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, (Geneva, 05 July 2019)

Mr. President,

1.India warmly welcomes the delegation of Afghanistan for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its Universal Periodic Review undertaken on 31st January 2019.

2.The review saw participation and engagement by as many as 94 member states taking part in the review. India appreciates the constructive engagement by the delegates of Afghanistan during the review. Accepting 235 recommendations including all 5 from India out of 258 recommendations that Afghanistan received shows the commitment that Afghanistan attaches to the UPR process. India appreciates due diligence adopted by an inter-agency mechanism composing 26 relevant stakeholders for evaluation of these recommendations. This demonstrates a solid commitment of Afghanistan to promote and protect human rights.

3.While recommending the adoption of the report on its UPR, we warmly congratulate Afghanistan for its successful review and wish it all success in its efforts in implementing its accepted recommendations.

Thank you, Mr. President.
