Statement by India under Adoption of the Report of the Working

Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Chile

in the 41stSession of the Human Rights Council ( 24 June – 12 July 2019), delivered by Mr. Vimarsh Aryan, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India, (Geneva, 05 July 2019)

Mr. President,

1.India warmly welcomes the delegation of Chile for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on its Universal Periodic Review undertaken on 22nd January 2019.

2.The review saw participation and engagement with as many as 101 delegations taking the floor and making 266 recommendations. India notes that as many as 211 recommendations have been accepted by Chile including all 3 recommendations made by India. We appreciate the fact that Chile has taken action since its review in January towards fulfilling some of the recommendations accepted by it. During the review, Chile had informed that it had successfully consolidated its institutional human rights framework through the creation of the position of Undersecretary for Human Rights and the development of the first national human rights plan. This is a significant development towards promotion and protection of human rights.

3.While recommending the adoption of the report on its UPR, we warmly congratulate Chile for its successful review and wish it all success in its efforts in implementing its accepted recommendations.

Thank you, Mr. President.
