Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 31st Session (5-16 November 2018) : 3rd UPR of China – Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Ambassador Virander Paul, Deputy Permanent Representative [Geneva, 6 November 2018]

Mr. President,

India welcomes the delegation of China.

2. India commends the progress made by China in advancing the recommendations received in its 2nd UPR, particularly in bringing socio-economic development, judicial reforms as well as in promoting human rights education. The reduction in incidence of poverty to 3 per cent and that of unemployment to 4 per cent are noteworthy achievements. India appreciates various measures undertaken by China in ensuring housing, public health services and other specific measures targeting women, children, elderly and persons with disabilities.

3. India recommends the following:

To ensure well-being of all it’s people based on inclusive development;

To continue taking measures for improving women’s development including participation of women in public affairs

To continue measures to improve the social security system for all;

To continue its study on the issue of establishing a National Human Rights Institution in accordance with Paris Principles.
