Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 27th Session (1-12 May 2017) on Right to Health/ Child & Maternal mortality : 3rd UPR of India. [Geneva, 4 May 2017]

India is committed to ensuring better health and wellbeing for its entire population. India’s National Health Policy targets highest possible levels of health and wellbeing for all at all ages. It promotes a preventive and promotive healthcare orientation in all developmental policies. It has universal access to good quality health care services without anyone having to face financial hardship as a consequence, as its goal. All the key indicators are showing very promising results.

2. Life expectancy for females has now gone up to 70 years from 31.7 years in 1950-51. Improvements in the Institutional deliveries have now reached 79% in 2015-16 from 29% in 1992-93. Women also contribute as health workers with 77.63% of health workers at the Sub-Center level and 51.39% at Primary Health Centres. Infant Mortality Rate was 57 per 1000 live births in 2005-06 and now it has gone down to 41 per 1000 live births in 2015-16.
