Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 27th Session (1-12 May 2017) on Trafficking in Persons: 3rd UPR of India. [Geneva, 4 May 2017]

Human trafficking is prohibited under the Article 23(1) of the Constitution of India. Trafficking of human beings, especially of women and children, is an organized crime that violates all basic human rights. India is committed to fight this scourge in all its forms. Trafficking being an organized crime needs deterrent mechanism for its investigation both at the domestic and international level and for prosecution and prevention. India has drafted a comprehensive legislation to cover all aspects of trafficking, especially women and children which aims to strengthen the existing provisions in our laws and address any gaps in the existing legislation.

2. India has ratified the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime and the three Protocols namely Protocol against Trafficking in Person, especially women and children; Protocol against Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air; and the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, their parts and components and ammunitions.
