Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 27th Session (1-12 May 2017) on Girl Child Education and the Implementation of Right to Education : 3rd UPR of India. [Geneva, 4 May 2017]

The Right to education in India does not discriminate against girls. In fact, the girl child is actively encouraged to attend school and extreme emphasis is given on the girl child enrolment. The retention of girl child and lowering of drop out of girl child in the middle school and further are showing encouraging results. Nutrition, Mid-day meals, scholarships, free school books, free uniforms and free transportation are some of the incentives that are being given in most parts of the country for girl students. Focus is now on their sports, cultural and participatory activities and not just on academics. All round progress is being reported in this regard from all parts of the large country that is India.
