Statement by India at the 142nd Session of the Executive Board (EB) of the World Health Organization (22nd to 27th January 2018) on Agenda item 4.2: Physical activity for Health, delivered by Sh. Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. [WHO HQ, Geneva, 26th January 2018]

Thank you Mr. Chair.

India has participated in the Regional Consultation to draft Global Action Plan on Physical Activityin August 2017.

2. National Mulit-sectoral Action Plan (NMAP) for prevention and control of NCDs is developed to guide multi-sectoral efforts towards attaining the national NCD targets. The plan has identified specific areas requiring multisectoral action to promote physical activity for health.

3. Specific communication campaign and mass participation initiatives in public spaces is taken up including promoting Yoga which supports creation of an active society.

4. India has launched a national program for development of Sports, with the target of covering 200 million children to improve physical activity among children.

5. Multiple media platforms including social media are being utilized to improve awareness about healthy lifestyles including promoting physical activity for health.

6. India is committed to undertake promoting Physical Activity and support the initiative and resolution in this regard.
