Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 29th Session (15-26 January 2018): 3rd UPR of Burundi – Interactive Dialogue, delivered by Ms. Mini Devi Kumam, Second Secretary, Permanent Mission of India. [Geneva, 18 January 2018]

Mr. President,

We thank the delegation of Burundi for presenting its national report.

2.  We appreciate Burundi for ratifying several international human rights instruments and transposing relevant provisions of these instruments into domestic law. Being a party to these instruments, Burundi has made significant progress in promoting and protecting human rights. We also appreciate Burundi’s National Action Plan on Gender Policy aimed at raising the awareness of gender equality; protecting women and girls from gender-based violence and promoting the participation of women in decision making bodies.

3. Burundi has made considerable progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We recommend further improvement of its healthcare infrastructure in order to enhance access to healthcare, particularly for women from poor and rural backgrounds.

4. We wish Burundi all success in its endeavours.

Thank you Mr. President.
