Mr. Vice President,

India thanks the delegation of Romania for the presentation of its National Report.

2. We commend Romania on establishment of institutions such as National Monitoring Council mandated to recommend rights of persons with disabilities and monitor their implementation by public or private entities and National Commission for Desegregation and Education Inclusion to coordinate the implementation of the action plan for school desegregation and for increasing the quality of education in pre-university institutions/units.

3. The establishment of Ombudsman’s department for the Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Punishment or Treatment in Places of Detention and National Agency for the Administration of Seized Assets to increase the capabilities of judicial authorities in identifying the proceeds of crime and to effectively repair the damages caused by criminal activities is also commendable.

4. We welcome Romania’s accession to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We recommend that Romania continues taking steps to combat child poverty and ensuring well being of children. The continued efforts of Romania towards inclusion of Roma minority in the fields of education, health, employment and housing are noteworthy.
